Heinrich Schwemminger
Heinrich Schwemminger (born January 7, 1803 on Althangrund , † March 13, 1884 in Vienna ) was an Austrian history painter .
life and work
Heinrich Schwemminger was a son of the porcelain painter Anton Schwemminger, who died in 1808. His younger brother Josef Schwemminger was also a painter. Her sister Theresia Schwemminger was a plasterer and married the painter Karl Schubert , a brother of the composer Franz Schubert .
Heinrich Schwemminger studied from 1818 to 1830, with interruptions, at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts . From 1823 he specialized in history painting. He was inspired by ancient sculpture and the paintings of Raphael . Schwemminger won the Gundel Prize in 1820 and the Reichel Prize in 1833 . In the early 1830s he traveled to Munich , where he joined the circle of artists around Moritz von Schwind . He stayed in Rome from 1837 to 1842 on a scholarship .
Schwemminger worked from 1843 as a curator at the picture gallery of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. He became a member of the academy in 1848 and worked there as a professor from 1849. From 1857 to 1874 he was in charge of the picture gallery. Following a reorganization, he published a collection directory for this in 1866. Schwemminger became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus in 1868 . He worked on the artistic equipment of the Vienna Court Opera and the Vienna City Theater .
Heinrich Schwemminger died at the age of 81 in Vienna- Alsergrund . In 1958, Schwemmingergasse in Vienna- Inzersdorf was named after him.
