Josef Schwemminger (born June 21, 1804 on Althangrund ; † January 12, 1895 in Vienna ; also Joseph Schwemminger ) was an Austrian landscape painter .

life and work

Josef Schwemminger was a son of the porcelain painter Anton Schwemminger, who died in 1808. His older brother Heinrich Schwemminger was also a painter. Her sister Theresia Schwemminger was a plasterer and married the painter Karl Schubert , a brother of the composer Franz Schubert .

Josef Schwemminger studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts from 1817 to 1827 and specialized in landscape painting with local motifs during this time . Many of his paintings are characterized by warm colors and lighting, several were distributed as steel engravings . Schwemminger traveled to various crown lands as well as to Bavaria and Italy . In 1848 he became a member of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and in 1868 a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus .

He died at the age of 90 in Vienna- Alsergrund .
