Heinrich Stratmann

Heinrich Stratmann (also Strotmann, Straetman, Strotman, Strothmann, Strodtman ) (* before 1600 in Höxter , † around 1654 in Arnsberg ) was a German Baroque painter .

Life

He belongs to the Stratmann family of artists, whose first well-known representative Gerhard Stratmann was born in Höxter and resident in Paderborn . He was the father of Heinrich Stratmann, who was born in Höxter. He later lived in Arnsberg and was a citizen of that city. As early as 1618 he was named " Henrich der Mahler " in the Arnsberg church accounts . He was church provisional in 1625 and was named councilor in 1634. Anton Fahne's statements that he lived in Soest do not apply. Since 1614 he was married to a born Ludimerdt. The marriage had seven children. There were two sons. One daughter married Johan von Bilefeldt, the mayor of Arnsberg. The couple donated the south altar of the town chapel . The altarpiece presumably comes from Caspar (born 1632) a son of Heinrich Stratmann. Another son was Henning Stratmann (born around 1630). He was also active as a painter. The family lived in a house (" Mahler's house ") between the bell tower and the monastery gate, which fell victim to the great fire in 1709. Heinrich Stratmann must have died around 1655, as his wife was named a widow in a tax list that year. One of the later descendants is Anton Joseph Stratmann .

Most of his activity was heraldic work mainly on behalf of noble families from Westphalia . A sketchbook that includes the work between 1636 and 1651 is in the State Archives in Münster . The book contains around 600 coats of arms.

He also painted paintings and panels. In the sketchbook there are several paintings for a folding altar in the St. Walburgis pen in Soest. One of his main works was the representation of the Jesse line in the church of the Wedinghausen monastery . The work has not been preserved. A family picture at Wocklum Castle is also mentioned . This showed Georg von Schüngel called Böckenförde , his wife Margarethe von Hatzfeld and the couple's fourteen children. Only a copy of this has been preserved. He was also busy painting over pictures of the apostles from the 15th century in the Patroklidom in Soest in the baroque style. A crucifixion scene in Bremke and an Annunciation scene in Niedersalwey probably also originated from him. He also created a crucifixion group that was originally created for the Himmelpforten monastery and is now in the parish church of Niederense . The picture is dated 1654. The baroque high altar in the parish church of Wenden is also by Heinrich Stratmann. In the Oelinghausen monastery church there is an altarpiece that shows the shepherdess scene in Bethlehem. In the St. Blasius Church in Balve there is a recently restored panel painting "Christ falls under the cross" by Stratmann. In the middle of the picture behind the depiction of the way of Jesus on the way to the crucifixion is a scene that is interpreted as a depiction of witches on the way to the pyre. It would be one of the few contemporary pictorial representations of the witch hunt in the Duchy of Westphalia .
