Heinrich Tuggener

Heinrich Tuggener (born August 1, 1924 in Cambrai , France , † January 25, 2019 in Bassersdorf ) was a Swiss social worker and university professor .

Life

Tuggener was born in northern France in 1924. In 1925 he came to Switzerland with his family . His father was an architect and worked as a civilian employee in the Swiss Army ; his stepmother was a primary school teacher in Zurich . He grew up with his grandmother. Tuggener went to the Gelbhausgarten secondary school in Schaffhausen and then did military service . After leaving school he went to the Evangelical Lehrerseminar Unterstrass and received in 1945 a teaching certificate for primary schools . He had his first permanent position at the Brüschhalde psychiatric observation station in Männedorf . There he also met Margaretha Dällenbach, whom he married in 1954.

From 1950 to 1954, Tuggener studied education , curative education , sociology and folklore at the University of Zurich . At the same time he worked at the senior seminar of the Canton of Zurich . In 1959 he did his doctorate with Leo Weber on “The teacher. Studies on the status, occupation and education of primary school teachers ”. From 1965 he taught at the School for Social Work in Zurich in the department for home education and home care training with a focus on professionalization . In 1971, on the recommendation of his former doctoral supervisor, Tuggener submitted his habilitation thesis on social work . He sent these to Klaus Mollenhauer and had them published by Beltz-Verlag . He held his inaugural lecture at the University of Zurich on February 21, 1972 on “Social Pedagogy - Past and Future”.

On October 1, 1972, he became associate professor at the University of Zurich. He built up his own teaching area: pedagogy with a special focus on social pedagogy . In 1976 he was promoted to full professor . Tuggener led various research projects that dealt with home education and the professionalization of staff in this context. He promoted the development of historical sources and researched the development of the Swiss social system as well as the relationship between education and justice. In lectures and seminars he taught the history of social education, systematics of social education and practical research . Heinrich Tuggener retired on October 15, 1989; the chair was taken over by Reinhard Fatke in 1991 .

From 1982 to 1988 Tuggener was President of the International Society for Educational Aids . From 1989 to 1998 he was President of the Swiss Charitable Society and the Rütli Commission.

Tuggener's hobbies were painting , drawing and playing the piano . He was also an avid cyclist who regularly went on bike excursions with his students to the places where Swiss pedagogues worked.

Tuggener died on January 25, 2019. He was a colonel in the Swiss Army .
