Heinrich Wilhelm von der Groeben (born August 11, 1657 in Schloßberg near Insterburg , † August 30, 1729 in Langheim ) was a German military man .

Life

He came from the old Brandenburg noble family von der Groeben . His father was Georg Heinrich von der Groeben (1630–1697), governor of Marienwerder and Riesenburg, and his mother Barbara Dorothea, née von Gattenhofen (from the Norhitten family). After attending the Jesuit grammar school in Rößel , Groeben studied law at the University of Königsberg , mainly law . He completed his studies with a disputation . He then went on trips for several years ( Grand Tour ) and stayed for a while in Paris .

In 1682 he fought first for Emperor Leopold I , then in Polish service under King Johann Sobieski . He fought in Hungary , where he took part in the siege of Oven , and in the Ukraine . He was first a sergeant major and then chief of an infantry regiment. In 1689 he gave up military service to take care of his extensive land holdings. Groeben was the first majorate on Gut Ponarien and lord of Gut Langheim. Groeben held the office of curator of the Groeben Majorat Institute and the Scholarship House. In his first marriage he was married to Helene Euphrasine von Hohendorf (from the Beyditten house), in his second marriage to Marie Eleonore Luise Countess von Wallenrodt († May 5, 1737) (from the Willkühne house). She was the daughter of Minister Adam Christoph von Wallenrodt .
