Heinrich von Klingenberg (* around 1240; † September 12, 1306 ) was Prince-Bishop Heinrich II of Constance from 1293 to 1306 and the custodian of the Reichenau monastery from 1296 to 1306 . He is considered the most important Constance bishop of the Middle Ages.

Life

Heinrich was born around 1240 as the son of the Thurgau knight Ulrich von Klingenberg and the Willeburgis von Castell. He studied in Bologna and Padua and became a clergyman, but also earned a doctorate in law. He entered the service of the German King Rudolf I and became his pronotarius and vice chancellor. He was a supporter of King Albrecht , whom he also served as an administrative officer and diplomat. After unsuccessful efforts to obtain the bishop's seats in Freising (1283) and Passau (1285), he received the provost office at the imperial monastery in Xanten (1288) and the provost office in Aachen (1292). After the Prince-Bishop of Constance, Rudolf von Habsburg-Laufenburg, died in 1293 , Heinrich registered his claim here and Friedrich I von Zollern , who was initially elected by the cathedral chapter , resigned immediately. Heinrich was consecrated Prince-Bishop of Constance in 1293 and on March 8, 1294 by Archbishop Gerhard of Mainz .

Since the convent members of the neighboring Reichenau monastery were initially unable to find a suitable successor from their own ranks after the surprising death of Abbot Mangold von Veringen , who could lead the economically troubled monastery, Heinrich von Klingenberg was appointed for ten years in 1296 Caretaker of the Reichenau Convention determined. However, he hardly cared about the affairs of the abbey, so that the convent members refused to extend the custody after the ten-year period.

Heinrich had the first land register drawn up for the prince-bishopric.
