Heinz Arnold (director)
Heinz Arnold (born June 19, 1906 in Darmstadt ; † July 24, 1994 in Baden-Baden ) was a German opera director and director.
Life
Born the son of a piano maker, Heinz Arnold attended the humanistic grammar school in Darmstadt. After graduating from high school, he studied music and theater studies at the Academy for Tonkunst Darmstadt . In 1925 he became a member of the Corps Obotritia Darmstadt. After completing his studies, he became assistant director under Carl Ebert at the Landestheater Darmstadt in 1927 , where he worked with Karl Böhm .
In 1932 Arnold was appointed senior director at the Wuppertal Municipal Theaters. In 1935 he moved to the Braunschweig State Theater. In 1938 he was appointed senior director at the Dresden State Opera , where he was also appointed opera director in 1946. He gained international reputation through modern productions, especially through his staging of the Antigonae by Carl Orff, performed in 1950 . In addition, he taught from 1946 as a professor at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden .
In 1950 Arnold left Dresden and moved to Munich, following a call as senior director at the Bavarian State Opera . In 1959 he was appointed professor for opera performance at the University of Music in Munich.
Arnold has worked as a guest director at numerous national and international opera houses. The stages in non-German-speaking countries included Ankara, Athens, Belgrade, Bologna, Buenos Aires, Florence, London, Naples, Palermo, Paris, Rome, Tehran, Trieste and Venice. In the German-speaking countries he was guest director in Berlin, Salzburg and Vienna. After his retirement, Arnold lived in Baden-Baden.
