The Hohlsteiner Steinbruch (better known as Einöde with the place name Holsteinbruch ) is a protected natural monument in the Worzeldorf district of the Middle Franconian city of Nuremberg .

geography

location

Hohlstein quarry near Worzeldorf (2017)

The quarry is located in the southern part of the city ( southern outskirts ). It can be reached from Münchener Strasse ( Bundesstrasse 8 ) via the Schwanstetter Strasse extension ( Staatsstrasse 2406 ). From a parking lot just before Worzeldorf, a forest path leads to the quarry in about 10 minutes.

fauna

The quarry with its ancillary areas represents the last habitat of the yellow-bellied toad ( Bombina variegata ) in Nuremberg. The endangered and strictly protected amphibian species occurs in the temporary small and micro waters of the area natural monument, which are used as spawning waters. By specializing in dynamic habitats, in which new ponds or small bodies of water repeatedly arise, the species finds suitable site conditions in this secondary habitat. The yellow-bellied toad colonizes the newly emerging habitats and waters of the quarry with little vegetation, since at this stage the areas are not yet attractive for the other animal species.

Protected areas

The hollow quarry is the only extensive natural monument in Nuremberg, next to the protected individual trees, rows of trees and avenues. The Holsteinbruch is part of the Worzeldorfer Berg – Glasersberg landscape protection area ( LSG-00536.03 ). The quarry and the adjacent wooded areas of the Glasersberg are protected as a European FFH area Kornberge near Worzeldorf . The yellow-bellied toad ( Bombina variegata ) is named as a conservation goal in addition to the species and structure-rich forest stands.

history

Geologically about 200 million years ago, in the Keuper period , the Wendelsteiner ridge was created, which extends from Worzeldorf far beyond Wendelstein. Historically it is called "Kornberg". The place is first mentioned by name in a mountain book as "Hohe Stein" in 1450. At that time there were eight stone pits, later two more pits were added, the Glasersberg , called Mittelbruch and the Worzeldorfer “Holsteinbruch”. For over half a millennium, quartzite and castle sandstone , the Worzeldorfer sandstone , were mined on the Kornberg .

There was a household in Holstein towards the end of the 18th century. The high court exercised the Brandenburg-Ansbach judge's office in Kornburg . The Laurenzi forest office in the imperial city of Nuremberg was the landlord of the property and ruled the village and the community .

In 1808, Holsteinbruch was assigned to the Großschwarzenlohe tax district , Section II, as part of the municipal edict . It belonged to the rural community Kleinschwarzenlohe formed in 1818 . With the construction of the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal as a transport route, the quarries experienced another strong boom from 1827 onwards. In 1883 five quarries still employed 80 workers. After 1885, but before 1900, Holsteinbruch was moved to Worzeldorf ( Schwabach district office ).

Due to the destruction of Nuremberg in the Second World War and the reconstruction, the Holstein quarry was once again significantly upgraded. The importance of the quarries stems from the quartzite stone found there, which is still in great demand with its variety of colors. Hard quartzite of hydrothermal origin and the castle sandstone are still mined to a limited extent at Hofmannsbruch . It is still mainly used for facade cladding and for repair work on historic buildings. The rest of the disused quarry is under nature protection.

On July 1, 1972, Holsteinbruch was incorporated into Nuremberg as part of the regional reform in Bavaria . After 1970, but before 1987, the place became a desert .
