Helen Björk (* 9 July 1965 as Helen Johansson ) is a former Swedish football national player . The striker played for the Swedish national women's team from 1981 to 1995 , with whom she became the first European champion in 1984.

Career

Helen played for various Swedish clubs. On September 26, 1981, she made her first international match in a 7-0 win against the Netherlands - until today the Dutch women’s biggest defeat. She scored her first international goal in a 4-0 win against Finland in the women's Nordic football championship, which was last held in 1982 . The Swedes were unable to defend their title, which they had won five times in a row. In 1984 she took part in the first official European football championship for women and reached the finals against England with Sweden . In the first leg in Sweden, which the Swedes won 1-0, she was unable to take part due to an inflammation of the heart , but she was able to participate in the second leg in England. Since the English won the second leg 1-0, there was a penalty shoot-out in which Helen was the only Swede to miss. But since her teammates were all successful and the Swedish goalkeeper Elisabeth Leidinge was able to save two English penalties, she and her team became European champions. Three years later she was again in the final with Sweden, but this time it was played in one game. Opponents were Norway and they lost the title with a 1: 2 defeat. Before that, they had defeated England 3-2 in extra time in the semi-finals. In 1988 she took part with Sweden in the 1988 FIFA Women's Invitation Tournament in the People's Republic of China and also reached the final there, in which they met the Norwegians again and lost 1-0. At the EM 1989 they failed in the semifinals to Norway. In the game for third place against Italy , it was Helen who made the decision in extra time. Two years later, the Italians were able to return the favor in the quarter-finals of qualifying : after a 1-1 draw in Sweden, a goalless draw at home was enough for them to reach the final thanks to the away goals rule . As the best quarter-final loser, the Swedes qualified for the first official women's soccer world championship , which took place in the People's Republic of China in 1991. Helen was used in two group games as well as the quarter-finals, where she received the second yellow card , and in the game for third place, in which they defeated European champions Germany 4-0. The EM 1993 then took place without Sweden, as they failed in the quarter-finals of the qualification to Denmark . Two years later they reached the final again, in which they did not play. In the semi-final first leg against Norway, she scored the goal of the 3: 2 intermediate result in the 3: 4 away defeat and in the 4: 1 in the second leg she was still there in the first half. After the European Championship semi-finals, she and her team also won the second edition of the Algarve Cup with a 3-2 win after extra time against Denmark. However , she was not nominated for the World Cup in her home country in June . With 88 internationals she ended her career in which she scored 23 goals and is eighth on the top scorer list .
