Helga Gudrun Roth

Helga Gudrun Roth (born June 20, 1943 in Dresden ) is a German specialist in surgery and pediatric surgery . She was the first female professor of pediatric surgery in Germany. For her habilitation thesis , she was the first woman to be honored with the Richard Drachter Prize of the German Society for Pediatric Surgery .

Education

After graduating from high school in Kassel, Helga Roth studied German and Romance languages at the Philipps University of Marburg and at the University of Paris-Sorbonne . From 1965 to 1971 she studied human medicine at the Free University of Berlin and at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . She did her doctorate in 1972 at the University Eye Clinic in Heidelberg .

Professional activities

As an assistant doctor for surgery , Helga Roth learned from Fritz Linder and received significant support from him. She was the first woman to be recognized as a specialist in surgery (1979) and specialization in pediatric surgery (1980) at the Heidelberg University Surgical Clinic. In 1988 she became the first woman to qualify as a professor at Heidelberg University Hospital in the field of pediatric surgery on the subject of: "Experimental study on the question of organ-specific functional loss after partial splenic resection" under the direction of Roland Daum. In 1990 she was the first woman to be awarded the Richard Drachter Prize of the German Society for Pediatric Surgery for her work . In 1995 she was appointed adjunct professor at Heidelberg University Hospital and at that time was the first female professor of pediatric surgery in Germany. Her specialty areas were pediatric oncology and neonatal and premature infant surgery. She was the senior physician and deputy medical director of the University Clinic for Pediatric Surgery in Heidelberg. In cooperation with the medical director Roland Daum, she achieved international recognition through numerous publications and made a decisive contribution to the development of pediatric surgery at Heidelberg University Hospital. Your list of publications includes over 100 original works and book chapters. She has presided over ten national and international congresses and gave 195 lectures. She performed a total of more than 4,000 pediatric surgical operations. In 2007 she was adopted into retirement.
