Ludwig Helmbold (born January 21, 1532 in Mühlhausen ; † April 8, 1598 there ) was a Lutheran hymn poet .

life and work

From 1554 Ludwig Helmbold was vice rector and professor of philosophy at the University of Erfurt . In 1570, in the conflict of the Counter Reformation , he was forced to abdicate. From 1571 he worked as pastor of the Marienkirche and later as superintendent in Mühlhausen. He died in the exercise of his office of complications from jaundice .

Helm Bold 1566 at the Diet of Augsburg by the German Emperor Maximilian II. The poet laureate crowned. The Mühlhausen cantors Joachim a Burck and Johannes Eccard set many of his more than 100 song poems to music.

In the current Evangelical Hymnbook (EG), the texts for the songs EG 320 (Now let's God, the Lord), EG 365 (I won't let go of God ) and EG regional part Northern Elbia 558 (Amen, God Father and Son) come from him .

Others

In 1998, Helmboldstrasse was named after him in the southeast of Mühlhausen, a left side street of Bonatstrasse.
