Helmut Böhme (historian)

Helmut Böhme (born April 30, 1936 in Tübingen ; † December 29, 2012 in Darmstadt ) was a German historian . From 1971 to 1995 he was President of the Technical University of Darmstadt .

Life

From 1955 Helmut Böhme studied history , German and English and economics at the University of Tübingen and the University of Hamburg . In 1962 he received his doctorate from the University of Hamburg with a thesis on the relationship between economy and state. In 1959 he was a research assistant at the Chair for Medieval and Modern History at Fritz Fischer in Hamburg , and in 1964 he became a research assistant and received a grant from the German Research Foundation . In 1969, one year after his habilitation in Hamburg, he was offered a professorship for modern history at the TH Darmstadt. He taught in the Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences, but since 1995 has also held a professorship for the history of architecture in the Faculty of City, Design, Urban Development and Settlement I at the Faculty of Architecture at the TU Darmstadt. In 2004 he retired.

Helmut Böhme was President of the TH Darmstadt from 1971 to 1995 . He was spokesman for the Conference of Hessian University Presidia (KHU) several times and was a member of numerous national and international committees. From 1993 to 1995 he was President of CLUSTER ; From 1990 to 1994 he was President of the first European network CESAER, which connects leading technical universities in Europe. From 1990 to 1994 he was also Secretary General and President of the Organization of Eastern European Technical Universities. He expanded the cooperation between TUD and universities around the world, in particular with the universities in Bucharest, Warsaw, Prague and Pressburg, later also with Tallira and Saint Petersburg and especially with the TU Sofia . He was the founder of the House for Industrial Culture in Darmstadt.

Helmut Böhme was buried in the Bessunger Friedhof (grave number: Wall 65).

Honors

Böhme was awarded honorary doctorates from the Technical Universities of Ankara, Bucharest, Lyon, Sofia, Veszprém and Warsaw. He was honored with the Order of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany (2008).
