Helmut Becker (politician)

Helmut Becker (born February 25, 1917 in Papitz , Merseburg district , † September 12, 1998 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German politician of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). From 1954 to 1958 he was chairman of the council of the Halle district .

Life

Becker, the son of a craftsman , trained as a hairdresser after graduating from elementary school and then worked in this profession until 1938. In 1928 he joined the Jungspartakusbund and in 1929 the Communist Youth Association of Germany . From 1938 to 1945 Becker was drafted into the Wehrmacht and from 1939 was a soldier in World War II . In 1945 he was taken prisoner by the Soviets , where he attended an antifa school .

In 1948 he returned to Germany and joined the SED. In 1948/49 he was an employee of the Saxony-Anhalt state board of the Free German Trade Union Federation (FDGB). In 1949/50 he worked as mayor in Schkeuditz and from 1950 to 1952 he was head of the state administration department of the SED state leadership in Saxony-Anhalt. From August 1, 1952 to 1954, he was initially secretary and from November 23, 1954 to July 1958, chairman of the council of the Halle district. On July 17, 1958, Becker was recalled in connection with the Wollweber-Schirdewan affair and received a "probation order" in the VEB Buna works . He later completed a correspondence course in economics at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg .
