Helmut Brinker

Helmut Heinrich Brinker (born August 17, 1939 in Lübbecke , Westphalia ; † July 9, 2012 in Langnau am Albis , Switzerland ; authorized to reside there) was a German-Swiss art historian and sinologist.

Life

Brinker studied the art history of East Asia and occidental art history as well as Sinology and Japanology at the Universities of Heidelberg , Harvard and Princeton . He was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation and held the Harkness Fellowship of the Commonwealth Fund in New York . In 1970 he received his doctorate from the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . From 1970 to 1982 he was a curator at the Museum Rietberg in Zurich and responsible for the East Asia department.

From 1970 he worked at the University of Zurich , initially as a lecturer and private lecturer . In 1978 Brinker was appointed associate professor and in 1982 professor for the history of art of East Asia at the University of Zurich. He was considered an expert on the art of Zen Buddhism .

Brinker published numerous academic papers and books, including Zen in the Art of Painting (1985) and ZEN: Master of Meditation in Pictures and Writings (1993).
