Helmut Walter Flügel (born August 18, 1924 in Fürstenfeld ; † May 6, 2017 ) was an Austrian geologist and paleontologist .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1942, Flügel studied geology with Franz Heritsch at the University of Graz . After military service on the Eastern Front and in Italy and being an American prisoner of war until 1946, he first studied civil engineering in Graz, but soon switched back to geology. In 1949 he received his doctorate under Karl Metz (The tectonics of the Plesch-Mühlbacherzug. An example of the dissolution of the tectonics of the Paleozoic west of the Mur). He then worked as an assistant at Metz, where he completed his habilitation in geology in 1953 and again in paleontology in 1954. In 1958 he became an associate professor and in 1968 a full professor at the Karl Franzens University Graz (for paleontology and historical geology). In 1994 he retired. He was on study visits to Turkey and Iran (1966).

Flügel was an honorary member of the Austrian Geological Society (and its chairman in 1977) and received its Eduard Sueß commemorative coin in 1994 . In 1972 he became a corresponding member and in 1984 a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . In 1976/77 he was chairman of the Natural Science Association of Styria. He is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences . In 1997 he became an honorary member of the Paleontological Society . Wing also dealt with the history of geology.

He was chairman of the commission for the paleontological and stratigraphic research of Austria and was active in the establishment of corresponding databases, for example the online database Austrofossil . He also worked on the Catalogus Fossilium Austriae of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

Since 1955 he was born with the geologist Maria Flügel. Kropfitsch married, with whom he had two daughters. He was the brother of Erik Flügel .
