Helmut Freitag (* July 1960 in Bad Kreuznach ) is a German church musician in the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate, pianist and currently University Music Director and honorary professor at Saarland University .

education

Freitag studied church music (A-exam) , school music (state exam for history and music) and orchestra conducting (diploma with distinction) in Saarbrücken , Düsseldorf and Geneva . His teachers were André Luy , Lionel Rogg , Jean Micault , Hans Drewanz and Hartmut Schmidt .

Professional

From 1988 to 1991 he directed the music school of the Kaiserslautern district . Since 1989 he has directed the Kaiserslautern Chamber Orchestra. With this he has performed in the USA, Scandinavia, Switzerland and Italy. On Easter Monday 1991 he became district cantor of the Protestant deaneries in Kaiserslautern and Otterbach. In 2001 he was appointed church music director. Since 1991 he has also been teaching vocal accompaniment at the Mannheim University of Music . 2002 He was appointed to the University of Music Director of the University of Saarland . In 2006 he was awarded the Bad Kreuznach Culture Prize. In 2007 Saarland University appointed him honorary professor for musicology.

Helmut Freitag is the initiator of the carillon , which was set up in 2009 in the Kaiserslautern collegiate church, which with 47 bells is one of the largest instruments of its kind in Germany. With his solo organ concerts he has performed in almost all European countries.

In 2017, Freitag became composers of the near region with his dissertation : Gerhard Fischer-Münster , Fridel Grenz , Magdalene Schauß-Flake , Dieter Wellmann . Studies on regional church music with special consideration of the works for organ for Dr. phil. PhD.
