Helmut Graßhoff

Helmut Graßhoff (also Grasshoff ; born November 7, 1925 in Hamersleben , † July 18, 1983 in Berlin ) was a German Slavist .

Life

Graßhoff was born the son of a businessman. After attending high school , he was drafted into the Reich Labor Service in 1943 . He then did military service from 1943 to 1945 and was a prisoner of war until 1947 .

In 1948 he passed the Abitur and became a member of the SED . He first completed an agricultural apprenticeship and trained as a banker . He then worked in the agricultural cooperative sector. In 1950 he studied economics and from 1951 to 1954 Slavic studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 1954 to 1956 Graßhoff was a research assistant and lecturer for Russian literature at the Slavic Institute of the Humboldt University. In 1956 he moved to the German Academy of Sciences (DAW) and was a scientific aspirant at the Institute for Slavic Studies there until 1959 . In 1959 he received his doctorate from the Humboldt University as Dr. phil. ( Dissertation : Antioch Dmitrievič Kantemir (1709–1744) and his relationship to Western European culture ). From 1958 he was secretary of the National Committee of the Slavists of the GDR. From 1958 to 1968 he worked as the deputy head of the literary studies department of the Institute for Slavonic Studies at the DAW and from 1965 to 1966 he was a research assistant in the language, literature and art class of the DAW. In 1969 he completed his habilitation at the Humboldt University in Berlin ( Habilitation thesis : Russian literature in Germany in the Age of Enlightenment . The propagation of Russian literature in the 18th century by German writers and publicists ). From 1969 to 1975 he was deputy head of the Slavonic Studies department at the Central Institute for Literary History of the DAW and the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (AdW). In 1972 he was appointed professor.

From 1963 to 1970 he and Ulf Lehmann edited the studies on the history of Russian literature in the 18th century . In 1975 Graßhoff became editor-in-chief of the Slawistik magazine .

Graßhoff carried out his research, teaching and publication activities in the field of Russian literature - especially the Enlightenment - and Russian-German and Russian-West European literary relations. However, he also included folklore, the history of culture and science.
