biography

Gstrein attended the ski school in Neustift and the ski school in Stams . The first successes were already evident in school races, for example in 1974 he became Austrian school champion in giant slalom. After his first European Cup appearances , he made his World Cup debut on February 7, 1979 in the slalom in Oslo and scored his first points with 16th place, because at the end of the 1978/79 season the best 25, and not just the best ten as usual before. World Cup points received. Four days later he was ninth in his second World Cup race, the Åre slalom .

Despite this good start in the World Cup, Gstrein was used again in the European Cup in the following season 1979/80 . With a victory in the giant slalom on the Jahorina and another three podium places in the slalom and in the giant slalom, he reached third place in the overall ranking and in the giant slalom classification. In the 1980/81 season he started again regularly in the World Cup, but only came 15th in the slalom in Kitzbühel in the points. At the beginning of next winter he therefore had to compete in the European Cup again, where he achieved third place in the slalom classification with good placements and therefore started playing in the World Cup again from January. He achieved his second top 10 result in the slalom in Kitzbühel and also scored points in three other races of the season.

In the 1982/83 season Gstrein came in the points only once, but with eighth place in the slalom of Kranjska Gora on January 30, 1983, he achieved his best World Cup result. After that, however, he was thrown back by an injury, which is why he was used again in the European Cup. The 1983/84 season was with the exception of a second place in the European Cup slalom at Kopaonik quite unsuccessful, which is why he lost the squad and ended his career.
