Helmut J. Psotta
Helmut Julius Psotta (born November 9, 1937 in Bottrop ; † December 29, 2012 in Wesel ) was a German painter, draftsman, photographer, performance and action artist and art educator .
Life
Helmut J. Psotta came from a family who immigrated from Upper Silesia to the Ruhr area , mainly cattle dealers, butchers, miners and small businesses. From childhood he played, painted and wrote poetry. After graduating from secondary school in 1955, he completed an apprenticeship as a glass painter at Peters (Bottrop and Paderborn ) and attended evening courses at the Folkwang School in Essen, among others with Jo Pieper (1893–1971) and Josef Urbach (1889–1973).
After completing his apprenticeship, he began regular studies in applied painting at the Folkwang School with Max Burchartz in 1957/58 . To study metal design ( enamel ), he switched to the Düsseldorf Peter-Behrens-Werkkunstschule in 1959/60 in the class of the enamel artist Lili Schultz (1895–1970). In 1961 he won an international competition with his stained glass window designs for the church of the Colegio del Verbo Divino in Santiago de Chile and at the beginning of 1963 took over the management of the chair for sacred art at the architecture faculty of the Catholic University in Santiago de Chile. In 1967 he returned to Europe and until the early 1980s taught mainly in the Netherlands. In 1982 he went to Lima / Perú and founded the artist group Grupo Chaclacayo . In 1984 the Art Museum Lima showed the group's first exhibition, after which the work was shown in the Federal Republic and the GDR from 1989 . The Grupo Chaclacayo dissolved in 1995. In 1998 Psotta moved to Berlin and turned to photography . From 2007 until the end of his life, he again devoted himself exclusively to drawing.
