Helmut Klingen (Oberwolfach 1975)

Helmut Klingen (born December 16, 1927 in Viersen ; † January 23, 2017 ) was a German mathematician .

Life

Helmut Klingen, the son of a senior student council, was drafted as a soldier in 1945 and taken prisoner of war in 1946. In 1947 he graduated from high school in Viersen. He studied mathematics and physics at the University of Göttingen with the state examination in 1953 and received his doctorate in 1955 under Carl Ludwig Siegel in Göttingen ( discontinuous groups in symmetrical spaces ). From 1955 to 1960 he was a research assistant in Göttingen. After his habilitation in 1957 he was a private lecturer in Göttingen, in 1960 a lecturer in Marburg and in 1961 in Heidelberg.

From 1962 Helmut Klingen was at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , first as an associate professor and from 1963 as a full professor. He was visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley (visiting professor 1958/59), at the Institute for Advanced Study (1965/66), at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Bombay (1968), at the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Saint Petersburg and Moscow (1989) and at MSRI (1994).

Klingen dealt with number theory , function theory of several complex variables, automorphic forms and especially Siegel modular forms.

He gave a lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Stockholm in 1962 ( Fourier expansion of modular forms ).

His doctoral students include Peter Bundschuh and Jürgen Wolfart .
