Helmut Petzold (born May 28, 1914 ) was a German football coach. From 1954 to 1966 he worked for Dynamo Dresden and Dynamo Berlin in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football . In the club history of Dynamo Dresden he is with almost nine years just behind Walter Fritzsch (nine years) the head coach with the second longest term of office.

Athletic career

At the age of 40, Helmut Petzold took over a soccer team in the GDR-wide game for the first time . At the beginning of the 1954/55 season he was coach of the upper division Dynamo Dresden, replacing the Hungarian coach János Gyarmati , who had switched to the soccer section of DHfK Leipzig . In the previous season, Dresden had reached third place in the league, after the 7th match day of the 1954/55 season, Petzold Dynamo Dresden had led to the top of the table. Then the league team was transferred to East Berlin , where they would compete as SC Dynamo Berlin in the future. In the second half of the season, several top performers had to be handed over to the DHfK team, so that at the end of the season Dynamo Berlin only ended up in 7th place. From 1956 GDR football played every calendar year, several regular players had left Helmut Petzold's team. This did not succeed in putting together a strong team again, so that Dynamo Berlin had to relegate from the league at the end of the season.

After relegation, Petzold was replaced by Fritz Bachmann and released in Berlin. He had to return to Dresden, where he took over the rest of Dynamo Dresden in early 1958. This makes Petzold one of six Dynamo Dresden coaches with multiple terms in office. Dynamo Dresden was promoted in 1957 under his predecessor Kurt Kresse from the fourth-class district league Dresden to the third-class II. GDR league . With Petzold, the Dynamos rose in 1958 in the second-rate first GDR league , and in 1962 they made it to the top division under Petzold. There they were immediately relegated, but from the 1964/65 season on, Dynamo Dresden was able to stay in the top league again permanently. Until the end of the 1965/66 season, Petzold remained coach of the Dresden league team, but then had to make way for the previous coach of the GDR junior national team, Manfred Fuchs . With the 1967/68 season, Petzold took over the training of the GDR league team of the company sports community (BSG) activist Karl Marx Zwickau . When this was taken over by the BSG Sachsenring Zwickau as the 2nd team in the course of the season 1968/69 , Petzold stayed with the team until the end of the season, but then switched to league competitor Chemie Böhlen for one season in 1969/70 . After that, Petzold did not appear again in higher-class football.
