Helmut Stechemesser (born August 14, 1953 ) is a German sports physician and athletics trainer .

Life

Stechemesser, who was an active athlete and specialized in the 1,500 meter run , studied at the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig , his diploma thesis from 1973 was entitled “The management of young athletes in the districts taking into account the territorial Conditions". He also completed a medical degree and became a specialist in sports medicine in 1984 and worked at the sports medicine department of the DHfK, his focus being on performance diagnostics in endurance sports. In his work as a trainer, Stechemesser was an “advocate of interval training”.

After the end of the German Democratic Republic he went to Austria and worked there as a sports doctor in Aspach from 1991 . As the medical director of a rehabilitation center there, his patients also included German biathletes and cross-country skiers. As a track and field trainer , he also looked after top athletes such as Stefan Matschiner , Theresia Kiesl , Stephanie Graf , Susanne Pumper , Simon Vroemen and Jolanda Ceplak . Prick knives have shaped Austrian athletics "over the past two decades and have given them rare successes," the Wiener Zeitung described in April 2011 the work of the German.

Vroemen, Ceplak and Pumper were suspended for doping offenses. He rejected a responsibility in this regard. He was responsible for the training plans and kept in touch by phone or email, he did not monitor every step the athletes took, said Stechemesser in 2008. Graf, who was charged with blood doping , accused him of having referred her to the “Humanplasma” institute, which was her own blood -Doping carried out on athletes. He took legal action against the statement by doping fighter Wilhelm Lilge that Stechemesser was a "doping man". Stechemesser's lawsuit was dismissed in the first instance because, according to the reasons for the judgment, Lilge was able to provide evidence that a mafia-like doping network existed in Austria and Stechemesser was one of the people behind it. In a conversation with the Upper Austrian News in November 2008, Stechemesser complained that when it came to doping, he was "automatically under suspicion because I come from the former GDR". The equation "Medicine plus GDR plus sport equals doping" is not true, so Stechemesser.

Stechemesser worked as a sports doctor in Aspach until he retired in September 2018 .
