Helmuth Kiesel

Helmuth Kiesel (born August 1, 1947 on the Spatzenhof, Bühlerzell community ) is a German professor emeritus for modern German literature in Heidelberg .

Life

From 1969 to 1974 he studied German and history in Tübingen . There he was in 1976/77 as a result of work on literary court criticism of Sebastian Brant to Friedrich Schiller doctorate . In 1984 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on Alfred Döblin's exile and late work. After substituting or professorships in Bochum, Tübingen and at the University of Bamberg , he came to the above-mentioned chair at Heidelberg University in 1990 . There he was retired in 2015.

The focus of his research is the history of German-language literature from 1918 to 1945. He is the editor of Heidelberger Jahrbücher (Springer, Heidelberg), Concepts (Niemeyer, Tübingen) and writings on literary studies (Duncker & Humblot, Berlin).

Among other things, Kiesel published books on Ernst Jünger . In addition, his contribution to the debate about Martin Walser's book " Death of a Critic " became known to a wider public. He has published on Erich Kästner , Thomas Mann , Max Weber , Franz Kafka , Bertolt Brecht , Gottfried Benn , Botho Strauss and Peter Handke, among others . He works as a reviewer for the FAZ .
