Henry van Lieshout

Henry Anthony A. van Lieshout CMM (born March  19, 1932 in Venlo , Limburg Province , Netherlands ; † December 24, 2009 in Lae , Papua New Guinea ) was Bishop of Lae .

Life

Henry van Lieshout joined the order of the Mariannhiller Missionaries . He made his first profession on September 8, 1954 and was ordained a priest on July 12, 1959 .

Pope John XXIII In 1959 he established the Vicariate Lae by decree and entrusted it to the missionaries of Mariannhill. In 1960, Henry van Lieshout belonged to the first group of Mariannhillers who settled in the Morobe province . He was pastor in Wau and Bulolo until 1963 and then pastor in Lae until 1965.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on November 15, 1966 first bishop of the diocese of Lae . The episcopal ordination took place on March 5th of the next year by the Archbishop of Madang , Adolph Alexander Noser SVD ; Co- consecrators were Leo Clement Andrew Arkfeld SVD, Bishop of Wewak , and George Elmer Bernarding SVD, Bishop of Mount Hagen .

Henry van Lieshout was President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands from 1975 to 1978.

He founded the “Center of Mercy” in Lae, which particularly cares for people who are infected with the immune deficiency disease AIDS or who suffer from malaria, TBC, asthma and the like. He also initiated a Catholic radio station for religious, social and cultural education.

On January 15, 2007, Benedict XVI. his age-related resignation and appointed the previous postulant master von Lae, Father Christian Blouin CMM, as his successor.

Henry van Lieshout was honored as “Chief”, endowed with the insignia of the “Grand Companions of the Order of Logohu” (Bird of Paradise) (“GCL”).
