Henry Norman (governor)
Sir Henry Wylie Norman GCB , GCMG , CIE (born December 2, 1826 in London , † October 26, 1904 ibid) was a British field marshal and governor.
Life
He was the only son of the merchant James Norman and his wife Charlotte, nee Wylie.
In 1840 Norman's father, who had worked as a merchant in Cuba for several years , became a business partner in a department store in Calcutta , where he was followed by his son and his wife in 1842. There he joined the 17-year-old British Indian Army . In 1844 he became an officer candidate. He fought in the Second Sikh War and was then appointed by Baron Clyde as a major in the campaign against the Afridi . Norman fought in numerous campaigns between 1850 and 1854 and in the Santal revolt from 1855 to 1856.
In 1883 he succeeded Sir Anthony Musgrave as Governor of Jamaica . In 1889 he became Governor of Queensland .
In 1902 he was promoted to field marshal.
