Herbert Aschmann

Herbert Aschmann (born June 6, 1913 in Meißen ; † November 20, 1975 there ) was a German painter and set designer . He was a member of the artist group Das Ufer .

Life

Herbert Aschmann was born in 1913 as the son of a worker from Hille-Werke in the workers' residential area of ​​Triebischtal . From 1927 to 1931 he completed an apprenticeship as a commercial artist in Dresden . From 1933 to 1939 he studied at the State Academy for Applied Arts with Max Frey and Arno Drescher . He then worked as a freelancer until 1950.

In 1938 he received his first major commission: for the city of Meißen, he produced a sgraffito work in the council meeting room based on the oldest cityscape of Meißen from 1558 by Job Magdeburg .

He designed the multi-storey glass windows of the Wilhelm-Pieck-Oberschule in Coswig , sgraffitos in the entrance hall of the Dresden Transport University and, together with Gerhard Schiffner, sgraffitos on the apartment block at Herbert-Böhme-Straße 8 in Meißen and on the new school building in Munzig . The sundial at the Meissen town hall was made by master locksmith Ernst Mann based on designs by Herbert Aschmann.

From 1950 he appeared mainly as a stage and costume designer. From 1950 to 1963 he worked at the Meißen City Theater, from 1963 to 1967 at the Görlitz / Zittau City Theater and from 1967 to 1969 at the German-Sorbian People's Theater in Bautzen .

Herbert Aschmann's work has been honored several times with the City of Meissen Art Prize. Herbert Aschmann died on November 20, 1975 in Meißen. In 2010 the Meißen City Museum received the painter's estate from the family property.
