Herbert Billib
Albert Adolf Walter Herbert Billib (born October 21, 1904 in Brandenburg an der Havel , † November 1, 2001 in Hanover ) was a German hydraulic engineer and professor for water management .
Life
Herbert Billib, who was born in Brandenburg, spent most of his youth in Silesia, was accepted into the Royal Prussian Cadet Corps in Wahlstatt near Liegnitz in 1914 and graduated from the Berlin-Lichterfelde cadet school . He then studied civil engineering from 1925 to 1930 at the Technical University in Breslau . During his studies he became a member of the Raczek Breslau fraternity in 1926 . After completing his degree as a Dipl.-Ing. He joined the Prussian hydraulic engineering administration as a construction trainee and was appointed to the departments of the Wroclaw hydraulic engineering department, the Neuhaldensleben sewer engineering department, the Neisse river engineering department and the police. Berlin used. In 1934 he took over the management of the construction departments in Ohlau and Ohleniederung (flood protection) at the Wroclaw Higher Presidium. In 1937 he was transferred to the Osnabrück Water Management Office as a regional building officer, where he carried out raised bog cultivation. In 1940 Herbert Billib became head of the Reich water management agency Lower Vistula in Gdansk as regional and building officer. In 1944 he received his Dr.-Ing. Degree from Ferdinand Zunker at the Technical University in Breslau. PhD.
After his war deployment as an OT general engineer in Army Group South, Herbert Billib was appointed Head of Water Supply in 1945 at the Stade Regional Presidium, from 1951 at the Hanover Regional Presidium, and in 1952 as Oberreg.- u. Building councilor appointed to the Lower Saxony Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forests as a consultant for water supply and wastewater.
In 1956 Herbert Billib was appointed to succeed Otto Uhden at the chair for agricultural hydraulic engineering at the then Technical University of Hanover (today: Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University of Hanover ). In 1957 he became the director of the newly created Institute for Water Management, Hydrology and Agricultural Hydraulic Engineering. In addition, from 1959 he acted as managing director of the Board of Trustees for Water and Cultural Building. Until 1956, the main focus of research at the chair was on the North German Plain with its great potential for cultivable wetlands, but H. Billib made a significant shift and expansion of the work areas: The regulation of the water balance as part of a general state plan for the benefit of the population and industry , agriculture and forestry taking into account the influences on existing ecological systems came to the fore in his research. Within this larger framework, new subject areas such as groundwater hydrology, simulation technology in hydraulic engineering, stochastic hydrology and tropical water management were developed and integrated into teaching and research.
1963 H. Billib became a member of the Brunswick Scientific Society elected in 1972, he was in recognition of his outstanding achievements in his field with the honorary doctorate (nat rer Dr... Hc) of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Award, in 1974 he became an honorary member of the Hungarian Hydrological Society, 1978 honorary member of the German Association for Hydraulic Engineering and Culture (today: DWA).
Herbert Billib married Inez Kesselbauer in 1938. The marriage resulted in five children, four sons and one daughter. He died in 2001 at the old age of 97.
