Herbert Strutz (born June 6, 1902 in Klagenfurt , † October 1, 1973 in Vienna ) was an Austrian journalist and writer .

Life

Strutz had two siblings. His father owned a prosperous art and building locksmith's shop . After his death in 1909, his mother sold the company in 1912 and the family moved to Vienna.

After the First World War , the family experienced a social decline. Strutz dropped out of secondary school in 1918 and began an apprenticeship in bookselling, which he also dropped out. This was followed by piano and composition studies at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts . Because of an overplayed left hand , he had to reorient himself and from 1923 he was a journalist, primarily as a concert and art critic. However, he now saw his calling in fiction. In 1932 he published his first book of poems Wanderer im Herbst .

Strutz managed to navigate between the corporate state and National Socialism . While his literature critical of civilization was well received by the regime, he was an illegal member of the NSDAP from 1933 , so that even after the Anschluss he easily found employment and received awards.

In 1942 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht , but did not come to the front because of severe rheumatism. After a short American captivity, he did not return to Vienna in 1945, but to Carinthia. Because of false information in the course of denazification , criminal proceedings were initiated, which were discontinued in 1948. In Carinthia he became an art critic for the Volkszeitung .

In 1955 Strutz withdrew from journalism and became a full-time writer.

Strutz was on friendly terms with Guido Zernatto and Josef Friedrich Perkonig .
