Herbert Wehnelt

Herbert A. Wehnelt (born September 20, 1918 in Guhrau , Silesia , † February 17, 2007 ) was a German officer, most recently with the rank of lieutenant general in the Air Force . From 1971 to 1974 he was the commanding general of the Air Fleet Command .

Life

Herbert Wehnelt attended the Reform-Realgymnasium in Guhrau until 1936 and then joined the Air Force as a flag junior . He attended the aerial warfare schools in Wildpark and Berlin-Gatow and was promoted to lieutenant in 1938 after being transferred to Jagdgeschwader 2 "Richthofen" . From 1939 to 1945 Wehnelt was used as a fighter pilot , intelligence officer, adjutant, squadron captain and group commander in Jagdgeschwader 51 ; most recently he was commodore of a hunting school squadron.

After the end of the Second World War, Wehnelt worked as an independent businessman. In the spring of 1954 he was appointed to the office of Blank , in the air force planning group. In 1956 he was assigned to the Royal Air Force (RAF) in England to receive practical training on modern jet aircraft. In 1957 Wehnelt, meanwhile promoted to lieutenant colonel, was entrusted with setting up weapons school 10 in Oldenburg and Nörvenich. After being promoted to Colonel , Wehnelt was commander of the Luftwaffe 10 weapons school in Jever from May 1957 to February 1962 , after which he began his service as the first commander of the Northern Fliegerdivision in Münster.

Promoted to Lieutenant General, Wehnelt took over the post of Commanding General of the Air Fleet Command from April 1, 1971 to September 30, 1974 .
