description

The Herdbrücke is one of the first prestressed concrete bridges built in Germany after the Second World War . The approximately 62 m long and 16 m wide bridge spans the Danube with a single, approximately 55 m wide arch. Its reinforced concrete deck is supported by three parallel, haunched hollow box girders made of prestressed concrete, which give the bridge its arched appearance.

history

First bridges

According to most sources, a bridge over the Danube in Ulm was first mentioned in documents in 1240. It was probably located a little downstream from today's bridge near what would later become the hospital tower. An even earlier mention can be found in the continuation of the Chronicle of Vincent of Prague , begun by Abbot Gerlach von Mühlhausen (1165 – ca .: 1222) in 1187 , where for the year 1174 is mentioned: Est ibi pons per predictum flumen ... ( There is there a bridge over the river mentioned ... ) The exact location of this bridge can no longer be determined, also not whether it coincided with the location of the bridge mentioned in 1240.

The name Hertprugg is mentioned in a document in 1349. It is the name of the bridge on which Ulm herders drove their herds to the pastures on the other bank. The Schedelsche Weltchronik from 1493 contains a view of Ulm with a wooden bridge standing on two pillars, which leads into the Herdbrucker Tor. Like all wooden bridges, it often had to be replaced after being destroyed by floods or during the war.

A stone bridge was built from 1569 to 1573, which survived until it was demolished in 1828.

Ludwig-Wilhelms-Bridge (1832)

In May 1828 the construction of the Ludwig-Wilhelms-Brücke, named after the kings of Bavaria and Württemberg , began on the abutments and with the construction of a temporary footbridge over the Danube. On October 15, 1829, the laying of the foundation stone was celebrated with great pomp on both abutments, although it became clear that the bridge from Ulm, but less so from Neu-Ulm, was wanted, where it was feared that the business would be relocated to Ulm. After the completion of the bridge with three stone arches on June 9, 1832, its opening was celebrated much more simply. It was guarded by Bavarian and Württemberg teams. Until 1890 it could be closed at both ends by wrought iron gates. A thick line in the middle of the bridge marked the boundary.

On April 24, 1945, shortly before the end of the Second World War and immediately before the occupation by the US Army, this bridge was also blown up.

Herd Bridge (1949)

After the war, the residents first had to make do with a temporary pedestrian bridge. Between 1947 and 1949 the new Herd Bridge was built as a modern prestressed concrete bridge according to the plans of Willy Stöhr and inaugurated on Oath Monday , August 8, 1949.

Renovation (2016)

From July 19 to the original end of November 2016, the Herdbrücke was extensively renovated while operations continued. Since deficiencies in the concrete structure and the supports were found during a routine check, the two cities of Ulm and Neu-Ulm decided to undertake extensive renovation work for around 790,000 euros instead of a replacement building, which cost more than four million euros and entailed significantly greater restrictions would have. The load capacity, which was limited to 24 tonnes a year earlier, will remain in place after the renovation. The renovation is intended to extend the life of the bridge by around 25 years. The condition of the bridge is also sufficient for a future extension of the Ulm tram to Neu-Ulm.

During the construction work, a Deutsche Telekom cable harness was damaged, as a result of which telephone and internet services were completely out of order in large parts of the Neu-Ulm urban area and the northern district .

Since the construction work lasted until December 2016 and then could not be completed by the end of the year due to the weather conditions, the work was paused on December 12, 2016 and completion was postponed into the new year. This was delayed until May 2017 because the damage to the structure was greater than originally determined. This also increased the total costs to 1.2 million euros.
