Heriot is a small settlement in the Clutha District of the Otago regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The settlement was probably named after the maiden name of the wife of one of the first settlers, William Pinkerton .
geography
The settlement is about 36 km northeast of Gore between the Blue Mountains in the southeast and the Dusky Forest in the west. The closest larger town is Tapanui , 10 km to the south. The Heriot Burn flows through Heriot and flows into the Pomahaka River a few kilometers south .
history
The settlement was connected on April 1, 1884 by an extension of the Tapanui Line with Kelso and thus with Waipahi and the Main South Line . However, after a flood in Kelso in 1978, the railway line was abandoned.
economy
The main livelihoods in the settlement are cattle farming and fruit growing.
