Hermann Brandt (theologian)

Hermann Brandt (born August 31, 1940 in Münster ; † May 21, 2009 in Erlangen ) was a German Protestant theologian .

Life

Brandt studied Protestant theology from 1960 to 1964 in Münster, Heidelberg and Göttingen. He passed his first theological exam in 1964. 1965–1967 he worked on his doctorate in order to immediately take up a position as a research assistant in the theological department of the Lutheran World Federation in Geneva . 1968–1971 he was vicar, later pastor of a Lutheran parish of the Lippische Landeskirche in Detmold . During this time (1969) he also received his doctorate.

Between 1971 and 1978 he taught systematic theology at the Theological College of the Evangelical Church of the Lutheran Confession in Brazil (EKLBB) in São Leopoldo and was rector of this institution from 1974 to 1975 . Subsequently (1978-1983) he worked as a pastor in the Reformed Church in Schlangen . At the same time, he took on a teaching position with a focus on ecumenism and mission in Paderborn . 1983-1993 he was senior church councilor in the Lutheran Church Office of the VELKD in Hanover, an expert on Latin American issues, ecumenism and liberation theology .

From 1988 to 1990 he was also a lecturer in ecumenism and mission studies in Hamburg , where he qualified in 1990 for the subject of religion, mission and ecumenism science and then was a lecturer. From 1993 he was professor for missions and religious studies as well as ecumenical theology in Erlangen . In 2005 he retired from this chair. From 1995 to 2003 Brandt was also university preacher and from 1997 to 2004 Ephorus of the student dormitories of the Martin Luther Association (MLB).

In 2009 Hermann Brandt died after a serious illness in Erlangen, where he was buried in the Neustädter Friedhof.

Act

In addition to the already mentioned areas of interest ecumenism, mission and liberation theology, Hermann Brandt dealt with interreligious (especially Judeo-Christian ) dialogue and contextual theologies. He was a critic of anti-Judaistic tendencies in liberation theology.

Even after his return to Germany in 1978, he maintained links with Latin America, for example through a research semester in 2003 and a visiting professorship in 2005. Brandt published numerous articles in Lutheran Church in the World , the MLB's magazine.
