Johannes Pfannenstiel
Hermann Johannes Pfannenstiel (born June 28, 1862 in Berlin , † July 3, 1909 in Kiel ) was a German obstetrician and gynecologist .
In 1900 he modified the method of the transversal Caesarean section (which he called "horizontal") , which was given by Ferdinand Adolf Kehrer in 1881 and which is now named after him (Pfannenstielschnitt), by opening the fascia of the abdominal muscles transversely as well.

The son of a bank director attended the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Berlin until he was 18 years old, then studied medicine at the University of Berlin against his father's will until 1885 and received his doctorate in the same year with the grade summa cum laude . He then worked for two years as an assistant doctor at the city hospital in Poznan , then with Heinrich Fritsch at the women's clinic in Wroclaw . He completed his habilitation in 1890 and settled in a private practice in Breslau in 1894, until in 1896 he became head of the gynecological department of the Elisabethinerinnen- Hospital in Breslau and an associate professor at the University of Breslau . In 1902 he accepted a full professorship at the University of Giessen and in 1907 another to Kiel . There he died of an infection that he contracted during an operation.
Johannes Pfannenstiel was born in 1889 with Elisabeth. Behlendorff married. They had a son, the racial hygienist Wilhelm Pfannenstiel .
