Hermann Joseph Hummel

Hermann Joseph Hummel (born June 1, 1834 in Mainz-Weisenau , † May 5, 1921 in Hochheim am Main ) was a German manufacturer, councilor, association official and politician .

family

Hummel was the son of the farmer and cooper Urban Hummel (* May 18, 1811 in Weisenau; † February 2, 1847 there) and his wife Catharina nee Kaub (* March 17, 1815 in Weisenau; † 1891 there). Hummel, who was a Catholic denomination, married Josepha Munck (born April 14, 1843 in Hochheim am Main) on October 9, 1862 in Hochheim am Main, the daughter of the Hochheim innkeeper Georg Adam Munck. His grandson Diether Hummel also became President of the Association of German Sektkellereien.

Life

Hummel attended the elementary school Weisenau and the grammar school in Mainz. After the early death of his father, he had to leave school at the age of 14 and take over his father's farm. From 1850 to 1843 he did a commercial apprenticeship with a grain trader in Mainz and then worked at Mainz Henkell & Co. Sektkellerei in Walpodenstrasse. In 1857 he moved to Burgeff where he became an authorized signatory in 1859 . From 1871 he was the company's technical director, and in 1887/88 he was also given commercial management. In 1919 he left the operative business, but remained on the company's board of directors until his death.

Hummel, he was a member of the Wiesbaden Chamber of Commerce and the German Trade Day . He was the first chairman of the professional food association and until 1921 president of the Association of German Sektkellereien .

politics

Hummel represented liberal positions and joined the DVP in 1918 . He was the head of the city council in Hochheim am Main for many years. He belonged to the district council of the district of Wiesbaden from 1886 to 1918/19 and was also a district committee member or district deputy there. From 1893 to 1918 he was a member of the Nassau municipal parliament and provincial parliament of the province of Hessen-Nassau for the district of Wiesbaden . In 1811 and from 1815 to 1818 he was senior president of the municipal council. In the municipal parliament he was a member of the finance and road construction committee.

Honors

In 1914 he was appointed to the Secret Commerce Council. He was made an honorary citizen by the city of Hochheim am Main .
