Hermann Kress

Wilhelm Hermann Kress (born August 15, 1894 in Zuffenhausen ; † August 29, 1954 ) was a German academic sculptor , etcher and draftsman.

Hermann Kress was born in Zuffenhausen . Due to his artistic talent, he was able to study with Jakob Brüllmann at the Stuttgart Art Academy in 1912 . From 1918 to 1923 he studied at the Dresden Art Academy and was a student of Georg Wrba . In addition to his studies in sculpture, he took part in drawing and painting lessons. He also became famous as a painter through his color etchings . From 1924 Kress worked in his own studio at Ammonstraße 9, a garden building with a residential building. In 1945 his property was completely destroyed by the bombing raids on Dresden and he lost all of his artistic work. After 1945 he left the destroyed city of Dresden and moved to Stuttgart.

Pioneer Monument, Dresden
  • 1923: Pioneer monument on the Brühlschen Terrasse Dresden, dismantled in 1946 and rebuilt in 2012. The memorial is a reminder and reminder for the 4,000 fallen Saxon pioneers in World War I and was inaugurated on June 16, 1923. In the Saxon Army there were pioneer units for military and civilian missions under August the Strong since 1698 . The communist rulers had the pioneer monument removed in 1946. The lion figure and some stones were, however, rescued with difficulty and were in the city's lapidarium (former Zion church and catacombs under the Brühl terrace). In 2002, a copy of the lion figure cast in 1986 from the former pioneer monument was erected in Dresden-Friedrichstadt . After a year of rapid reconstruction, the pioneer memorial is now in the Army Officers' School on Stauffenbergallee and was inaugurated on October 13, 2012.
  • 1928: Fountain figure with Saint George fighting the dragon in the Plauen castle courtyard for the victims of the First World War, re-erected in the city park in 1979, meanwhile transferred to the lawn between Hammerstraße and the new Elsterbrücke

  • 1953: Facade relief at the Stuttgart district court
  • 1956 (?): Figure of female genius based on a design by Hermann Brachert at the Stuttgart district court
