Hermann Linde the Elder

Hermann Linde also Hermann Linde the Elder (born October 7, 1831 in Crossen an der Oder ; † December 11, 1918 in Lübeck ) was a German pharmacist and photographer.

Life

Linde came after six years of wandering in 1853 to Luebeck and entered as an assistant pharmacist in the pharmacy of Franz Friedrich Kindt in Alfstraße one. In 1860 he married Katinka Stolle (* 1839), the daughter of the painter Christian Peter Wilhelm Stolle in Lübeck. The marriage produced eight children, including a. the ophthalmologist and art collector Max Linde , the painter Heinrich Eduard Linde-Walther and the oriental painter Hermann Linde .

Linde had been a Freemason member of the Johannisloge Zum Füllhorn since 1859 and, as the successor to Heinrich Gustav Plitt, its chairman Meister from 1880 to 1889. During his tenure, the new Lübeck Lodge House was built . He worked actively in the Society for the Promotion of Charitable Activities and was a member of the Lübeck citizenship from 1883 to 1895 .

Photography pioneer

In 1852 Linde constructed his own camera obscura and experimented with it. He was inspired by the inventor Louis Daguerre . In his memoirs he writes: “I built a small camera out of cardboard into which the conscious magnifying glass was used as a lens , made the prescribed preparations, iodine and bromine ammonium , and produced the necessary photographic collodion myself . I had prepared the plate in a darkened wardrobe. ”He had received a camera from Georg Christian Kindt .

In 1855, Linde and David Eichmann , a student of Joseph Wilhelm Pero , opened a studio for photography and daguerreotype in Lübeck under the name Photographisches Institut . Linde took over this company completely when Eichmann went to Hamburg in 1858. Linde mainly gained a reputation as a portrait photographer. The Mann family , Emanuel Geibel and Fritz Reuter , among others , were photographed with him.

He became the city's most popular photographer for the next few decades. In 1891 he ended his activity as the competition in this profession in Lübeck had meanwhile grown.
