Hermann Mesander

Hermann Mesander (* before 1577 ; † December 11, 1640 in Norden ) was a pastor and poet .

According to the notes of Oldewelt, who was principal of the school in Norden from 1613 and 1618 , Mesander was an East Frisian . He was considered a popular and famous person here and wrote poems on the title pages of which he referred to himself as "Frisius". His date of birth and the names of his parents are not recorded. He probably attended the school in Norden at the time of the principal Jakob Martini , who directed it from 1597 to 1601. According to one of his poems, he graduated from the University of Wittenberg . From 1598 he worked as a preacher in Grimersum, however, had to stop working after a short time due to his Lutheran faith.

In 1601 or 1603 at the latest, Mesander got a job as a Lutheran preacher with Katharina Wasa in Berum , where he spoke in the castle chapel until 1607. In 1603 he was elected principal of the north school. In the same year he got a pastor's position in Hage . In 1612 he settled as a preacher in the north, where he stayed until the end of his life. When he took up his post, there were three parishes in the north. Two of them were equal, the third was a vicarie . Shortly after he took up his duties, the parishes were reorganized; the southern service now led before the northern service. Mesander was thus the first preacher in the north and probably led the coetus there until 1640 . Later all three pastors were merged again to form a Comprimariat. The Coetus von Norden existed, interrupted from 1626 to 1631, from November 13, 1617 to 1642. It comprised the clergy from the north, the office of Berumer, the Brokmerland , the office of Pewsum and the glory of Dornum .

Enno Johann Heinrich Tjaden took Mesander into his "Scholars East Friesland". He referred to him as a person who "did not make himself famous with foreign scholars", but who was probably a good preacher. He described him as a good Latin poet and especially a very good epigrammatist . “Even if I did not want to say anything about the beautiful morality, which he did not want to say anything in the first two centuries in the short Latin epigrams, but which are, however, very spicy and pleasant and instructive to read by everyone; so all of East Friesland can thank him enough for having placed such short but nice memorials in Latin bound language in the third centurie for so many of our compatriots, some of his time, some of other famous foreigners as well.
