Hermann Seeger (geodesist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann Seeger (born September 16, 1933 in Westerloy ; † December 9, 2015 ) was a German geodesist , president of the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy , formerly the Institute for Applied Geodesy (IfAG), and a retired university professor. He is considered one of the pioneers of satellite geodesy in Germany.

Live and act

Hermann Seeger studied geodesy at the Technical University of Hanover . This made him a doctorate in 1965 as Dr.-Ing. The topic of the dissertation was a contribution to electromagnetic distance measurement with 3 cm carrier waves [10 GHz], in particular with the electrotape DM-20 . After completing his technical traineeship , he worked for the first time at the Institute for Applied Geodesy from 1967 to 1987 . He significantly shaped the research work on satellite geodesy in Germany and was involved in the construction and expansion of the satellite observation station in Wettzell .

From 1978 to 1987, Hermann Seeger was the successor to Walter Hofmann as professor for geodesy and director of the geodetic institute at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn . One focus of his work was the expansion of radio interferometry and especially long-base interferometry (VLBI).

In 1987 Hermann Seeger became director of the Institute for Applied Geodesy . “His vision was to build a uniform [geodetic] reference system for the whole of Europe with the geodetic use of GPS ”. He is one of the founders of the EUREF (Regional Reference Frame Sub-Commission for Europe), a European sub-commission of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG). The task of EUREF is to define, implement and maintain the geodetic reference system in Europe. This was defined with the European Terrestrial Reference System 1989 (ETRS89).

Since 1979 he has been a member of the German Geodetic Commission .

In 1998 Hermann Seeger retired. His successor as President of the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy was Dietmar Grünreich. Hermann Seeger died on December 9, 2015.
