Life

Hermann Sondermann studied in Berlin from 1851 to 1853 with Johann Samuel Otto , two years until 1855 in Antwerp with Josephus Laurentius Dyckmans and, after a short stay in Paris, from 1856 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow and Rudolf Wiegmann . In private lessons with the Düsseldorf painter Rudolf Jordan , he familiarized himself with painting popular life .

Sondermann stayed in Berlin again from 1859 to 1861 and then settled in Düsseldorf , where he lived on Jägerhofstrasse and belonged to the Malkasten artists' association . At times he lived in the Willingshausen painters' colony .

His works were traded internationally during his lifetime. Some are in the Städtisches Museum Braunschweig and the Städtische Galerie Wiesbaden as well as in the possession of the Birmingham Museums Trust.
