Josephus Laurentius Dyckmans , also Joseph (Jozef) Laurent Dyckmans (born August 9, 1811 in Lier , † January 8, 1888 in Antwerp ), was a Belgian painter .

life and work

Josephus Laurentius Dyckmans first studied at the art academy in Lier with Veeroort and MG Thieleman, before moving to the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten Antwerp , where the painter Gustaaf Wappers taught him. Initially also active as a decorative painter, Dyckmans, under the influence of Wappers, turned to history painting and the representation of genre pieces, which soon earned him the nickname "Flemish Gerard Dou (de Vlaamse Gerard / Gerrit Dou)".

With great success he exhibited his painting Confession of Love in Antwerp in 1834, and in 1836 he received a silver medal in the Brussels Salon. From 1840 to 1854 Dyckmans worked as a professor at the Academy in Antwerp. Foreign trips are documented for the year 1841 to Paris and Amsterdam. From 1843 he was a member of the Antwerp Academy, from 1847 he was also a member of the Académie royale de Belgique .

One of the artist's best-known works is his painting The Blind Beggar from 1852 ( Royal Museum of Fine Arts , Antwerp ). As with various other works, Dyckmans made different versions of this in the following years. In his portraits he showed people from different social classes without pursuing socially critical goals. His pictures mostly show harmonious scenes that are reminiscent of Biedermeier salon pictures. Carried out in the most precise fine painting, his works show a harmonious color scheme, as can also be found in the work of Ernest Meissonier . In addition to portraits, landscapes, cityscapes and flower pictures are part of his oeuvre. He also created a number of graphics.

From 1846 to 1869 he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy of Arts in London and sold numerous works to Great Britain. Joseph Laurent Dyckmans was honored as an officer of the Leopold Order in 1870 . His students included Wilhelm Busch , Friedrich Karl Hausmann , Emil Hünten , Jean Moeselagen , Paul Weber and Jan Frederik Pieter Portielje .
