Hermann Teske

Hermann Teske (born July 10, 1902 in Berlin , † November 1, 1983 in Tutzing ) was a German officer, archivist and non-fiction author. Among other things, he was head of the military archive at the Federal Archives in Koblenz.

Teske was the son of a forest construction inspector . After graduating from high school in 1921, he volunteered . In 1922 he joined the 9th (Prussian) Infantry Regiment of the Reichswehr . From 1923 to 1925 he attended the infantry school of the Reichswehr in Munich and Ohrdruf. In 1925 he was made a lieutenant . As a first lieutenant he was stationed in Spandau; In 1929 he was transferred to the Army Sports School in Wünsdorf as an adjutant . In 1934 he became a captain .

From 1936 he attended the War Academy in Berlin. At the beginning of the Second World War he became Second General Staff Officer (Ib) of the 5th Infantry Division of the Wehrmacht. As a major i. G. he was First General Staff Officer (Ia) in the 12th Infantry Division . Later he was employed at Army High Command 7 . In 1942 the Colonel and General of Transport was transferred to Army Group Center . In 1944, as Colonel i. G. a combat force and was badly wounded. He was u. a. awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class and the German Cross in Gold. After his stay in the hospital he was a US prisoner of war until 1948 . He was in the Historical Division with Generaloberst a. D. Franz Halder active.

After working briefly as a sales representative, Teske, who had already published some military-propagandistic works in the 1930s, found a new main field of activity as a military writer. From 1957 to 1960 he was editor-in-chief of the Wehrkunde magazine . He also worked for the Neue Deutsche Biographie (NDB). In 1960 he became head of the military archive at the Federal Archives in Koblenz (later relocated to Freiburg) with the rank of senior archivist.

As a publicist, Teske was best known as the founder of the book series Die Wehrmacht im Kampf . Teske also edited various memoirs, such as Hasso von Wedel's . His other works include the book When the Present Becomes History , which is a mixture of research reports and the publication of original material from the holdings of the Federal Archives. In particular, Teske describes his efforts there to acquire original sources as archive material for the Federal Archives. The book was published by the right-wing extremist Kurt Vowinckel Verlag .

After his retirement in 1965 he lived in Tutzing.
