After attending primary school, he first worked in his parents' farm and then began an apprenticeship as a typesetter in 1959 . After his conversion at the age of 16, he was active in youth work . In 1964, motivated by attending the EC conference of the interdenominational Christian youth movement Decided for Christ , he began studying at the theological seminar of the Liebenzeller Mission , which was followed by a congregational internship in Oberöwisheim, Colmberg and at the YMCA in Winterbach connected. After that, Traub was youth officer in the dean's offices in Schorndorf and Welzheim until 1977. From 1977 to 1980 he was YMCA state secretary in YMCA Bavaria , from 1981 to 1993 general secretary of YMCA Baden , from 1991 promoted the construction and expansion of the YMCA living house Schloss Unteröwisheim and was co-founder and co-author of the magazine YMCA-Life . From 1993 to 2001 he headed the YMCA Ostwerk and co-founded the YMCA Missio Center in Berlin-Mitte. Between 2001 and 2007 he was pastor in Remchingen- Singing near Pforzheim. On Sundays he stood not only on the pulpits of churches in Baden, but also on those in the houses of the Liebenzeller community association . From 2006 onwards, Traub was honorary chairman of the "Christ Movement Baden" (formerly: Evangelical Association for the Bible and Confession in Baden). He was also the chairman of the “Working Group on Youth Evangelization”. From 2007 until his death he was the first chairman of the Pinéa-Programmgruppe e. V., who is involved in the holiday program and guest care in the Christian holiday complex "Résidence Pinéa" on the French Mediterranean island of Corsica . In addition, Traub worked as a speaker at leisure and boat trips . His travels took him to many European countries. His special love was Romania, where he was on the way to lectures at the theological faculty in Cluj-Napoca / Transylvania. From 2011 until his death he was the first chairman of the association "on a missionary journey".

In the 1980s, Traub took over the editorial management of the Bible reading aid “Start in den Tag”. As a member of the Biblical Reading editorial group, he was involved in the further development of Bible reading aids such as “Appointments with God” and “Bible for Today”. Every week the versatile theologian also published an illustrated spiritual impulse for pastors for publication in the parishes. He wrote texts for devotional books and daily Bible reading and gave readings at missionary evenings with music and picture presentations. Traub belonged to the Pastor's Prayer Association (PGB) in Baden, was a member of the support group of the Evangeliums-Rundfunks (ERF Medien) as well as in the editorial team and in the support group of the Baden Christian magazine "Hope + Act" .

He knew that he was very committed to the church and in his sermons repeatedly urged her to concentrate on the basic biblical mission: preaching , evangelism and building an active spiritual community. In June 2013 he initiated a so-called "Unteröwisheim Declaration" with 35 fellow pastors, which called for a fundamental spiritual renewal of the Baden regional church. His call for more tolerance by the church towards messianic Jews also received a very strong response.
