Hermann Wiener

Hermann Ludwig Gustav Wiener (born May 15, 1857 in Karlsruhe ; † June 13, 1939 there ) was a German mathematician .

Wiener was the son of the mathematician Christian Wiener , attended high school in Karlsruhe and from 1876 studied mathematics and natural sciences at the Technical University of Karlsruhe (then a polytechnic ), among others with his father. From 1879 he studied at the Technical University of Munich with Felix Klein and Alexander von Brill and from 1881 at the University of Leipzig . In 1881 he received his doctorate in mathematics in Munich on involutions on flat curves with Ludwig Seidel , and in 1882 he passed the state examination for high school teachers in Karlsruhe. He was then a teaching trainee in Karlsruhe and at the same time his father's assistant at the polytechnic. In 1885 he completed his habilitation at the University of Halle (purely geometric theory of the representation of binary forms by point groups on the straight line), where he then worked as a private lecturer until 1894 .

In 1894 he became a full professor of geometry at the Technical University of Darmstadt , where he stayed until his retirement in 1927.

Wiener made important contributions to the foundations of geometry in advance of David Hilbert's later synthesis. In particular, he examined the structure of geometry from reflections. He became a member of the Leopoldina in 1895 and a privy councilor in 1907. In 1890 he was a founding member of the German Mathematicians Association .
