Hermann von Kerssenbrock

Hermann von Kerssenbrock (* 1519 in Barntrup ; † July 5, 1585 in Osnabrück ) was long-time rector of the Paulinum grammar school in Münster .

Kerssenbrock was initially a student at the cathedral school in Münster in Westphalia, which later became the Paulinum grammar school. From 1548 to 1550 he worked as the rector of the Latin school in Hamm . He then returned to the cathedral school in Münster and was employed there from 1550 to 1575 as rector. Then he was headmaster of the cathedral school in Paderborn and the city school in Werl . He is known as the author of the history of Anabaptistici furoris Monasterium inclitam Westphaliae metropolim evertentis historica narratio . He wrote this book about the Anabaptist Empire in Munster in 1573, partly from his own perspective and on the basis of reports from other contemporary witnesses. In it he also describes the customs and conditions in Münster towards the end of the 16th century. In particular, his overly detailed description of the city fortifications of Münster led to a falling out with various authorities and he had to leave the city.

From 1582 to 1585 Kerssenbrock was rector of the cathedral school in Osnabrück , which later became the Carolinum grammar school . There he enjoyed incedibile dictu great popularity with the students and teachers, who dedicated the collection of poems Querela scholae Osnabrugensis to him on the occasion of his death .
