Herman von Petersdorff

Herman Gustav Wilhelm Raimund Ernst von Petersdorff (born January 16, 1864 in Stettin , Prussia , † July 23, 1929 in Berlin ), was a German historian , archivist and author .

His parents were the Prussian captain Gustav Karl Friedrich Ferdinand von Petersdorff (* February 16, 1831 - June 13, 1866) and his wife Marie Anna Sophie Johanna von Ohlen and Adlerscron (* October 9, 1843).

Life

From 1871 to 1876 von Petersdorff attended the municipal high school in Stettin and then until 1884 the Friedrich Wilhelm high school in Berlin. As a schoolboy he became a member of the genealogical-heraldic association Greif . Since he was hard of hearing after an illness in 1868, he did not become an officer, contrary to family tradition, but studied history and political sciences at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin from the winter semester 1884/85 after graduating from high school in 1884 . He became a member of the VDSt Berlin , whose coat of arms he designed. For a few semesters in 1886 and 1887 he studied at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg and the Ruprecht Karls University of Heidelberg . In Berlin, he became an issue on 20 December 1888 contributions to the economic, fiscal and military history of the Mark in the thirty years' war doctorate . He dedicated his dissertation to his grandfather, Baron von Ohlen and Adlerskron .

In 1894 he went to the Secret State Archives as an archive candidate and in the same year became a research assistant . After a few months he was transferred to the Marburg State Archives . In 1897 he was promoted to archive assistant at the Koblenz State Archives . There he became an archivist in 1900. In 1901 he went to the State Archives in Stettin . In 1908 he became an archivist . In 1918 he returned to the Secret State Archives, where he retired in 1929 due to old age.

He died in 1929 and was buried in the New Garrison Cemetery in Berlin.

As an old man , he became a member of the associations of German students in Berlin, Heidelberg, Marburg and Bonn . From 1891 to 1892 he was editor of the association's journal Akademische Blätter , in which he published numerous articles over many years. He worked as an association historian and association archivist of the VDSt . He managed the associated holdings in the Secret State Archives, where they were largely destroyed in 1945 by fire and looting.

Von Petersdorff wrote and published a large number of historical treatises on Prussian history and worked on the General German Biography in the last decade of the 19th century .

Some of his works are now available again as reprints from various publishers.
