Hermann von Petkum
Hermann von Petkum , also Hermann von Pettkum (born June 19, 1610 in Hamburg ; † December 21, 1682 ibid) was a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman and chief pastor in Hamburg.
Life
Hermann von Petkum's family probably came from the East Frisian Petkum . As is more common in northern Germany, the von is related to the Dutch van hier en designation of origin and not a nobility predicate . He was a son of the merchant Hieronymus von Petkum and grandson of the co-founder of the Hamburg orphanage Simon von Petkum. After attending the Johanneum School of Academics , he studied Protestant theology from October 1633 , first at the University of Rostock , then at the Albertus University of Königsberg and the University of Wittenberg , where he received his master's degree in 1636 after a disputation chaired by Jakob Weller .
In 1637 he received his first position as second court preacher to Count Ulrich II of East Friesland. In 1639 he became city pastor in Aurich . On July 24, 1644, he moved to Hamburg as a deacon (2nd pastor) at the main church Sankt Petri . Here he became chief pastor on September 7, 1673.
Since 1640 he was married to Elisabeth, geb. Praetorius, a daughter of Johannes Praetorius, the organist of the Hamburg main church Sankt Jacobi . One daughter married Georg JOnas Tosor, a son of Johann Heinrich Tonsor , who became superintendent in Otterndorf . The youngest son Johann Hieronymus von Petkum (1657–1713) was the only one who survived his father. He also studied theology and became a prince educator in Copenhagen and provost in Münsterdorf .
An epitaph in St. Petri and a pastor's picture in the sacristy, painted by the Hamburg painter Gerd Dittmers, commemorated von Petkum . The portrait in the sacristy has been handed down through a copper engraving .
