Life

Origin and family

As the son of Hermann von Velen and his wife Maria (Margaretha) von Morrien (1523–1596), Hermann von Velen grew up with his siblings

  • Adrian (around 1540 - after 1594, Canon in Münster and Osnabrück)
  • Johannes (1556–1616, canon in Münster and district administrator)
  • Alexander (1556–1630, court marshal and official drove)
  • Reiner († 1561, Canon in Münster)
  • Reiner († 1575, Cathedral Vicar, Vicedominus), Elisabeth, Sophia, Anna and Agnes (all canons)

in the Westphalian noble family von Velen . His father had made sure that all of his children could be given a prebend through skillful wealth management . On April 1, 1581, Hermann married Margaretha von der Horst (daughter of Dietrich von der Horst, Bergischer Hofmarschall, councilor and bailiff to Düsseldorf and Angermund). The relationship between the two families was presumably initiated on one of the numerous trips that Hermann's father took to the court in Düsseldorf as a ministerial councilor. Hermann's first son Johann Wilhelm was born in 1582 and died after a few months. Duke Johann Wilhelm was his godfather and first name giver. The next son Hermann (* 1589) died at the age of 19. Dietrich was the eighth of nine children. He was the founder of the city of Papenburg . The daughter Agnes (* 1585) was a canon in Nottuln .

Act

On August 23, 1561 Hermann received the cathedral praise in Münster from his late brother Reiner, which he had received on January 4, 1558. On June 2, 1575 , he renounced in favor of his brother Alexander. Hermann enrolled at the University of Paris on May 5, 1564 and in 1573 was appointed to the electoral court chamber councilor . In 1584 he succeeded his father as Drost in Meppen. He remained in this office until his death.

Others

In 1584, shortly before his death, his father Hermann wrote that his family was almost the only noble family, "still completely preserved by God's blessing in terms of house and name in the Münster monastery". He wanted to express that his family's place of residence and name were still identical. Hermann inherited the old family seat in Velen . His brother Alexander inherited Raesfeld Castle , which his father had acquired from his mother Margaretha von Raesfeld's inheritance claims.
