Hertha Engelbrecht

Hertha Engelbrecht (born March 28, 1922 in Hamburg ; † March 24, 2012 in Bad Honnef ) was a German lawyer who, as Senate Director, was head of the representation of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg at the federal government for 27 years . In addition, she was chairman, honorary chairwoman and managing director of the German Association of Women Lawyers .

Life

After High School Hertha Engelbrecht holds a degree in Law at the Law and Political Science Faculty of the University of Hamburg and placed there in 1953 her doctorate Dr. jur. with a dissertation on the subject of the liability of the spouses for the liabilities entered into by the wife from household transactions in English and Anglo-American law . She then entered the public service in Hamburg and in 1958, as senior government councilor, became head of the representation of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg at the federal government, which she headed for 27 years until 1985.

In 1965 she succeeded the lawyer Charlotte Graf as chairwoman of the German Association of Women Lawyers (djb) and held this position for two years until 1967. She was followed by notary and former chairwoman Renate Lenz-Fuchs as chairwoman, while she herself became honorary chairman of the djb.

In 1966 she was appointed government director. Hertha Engelbrecht later became Senate Director of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1996 for her services .

After her retirement on March 27, 1985, Niels Jonas followed her as head of the representation of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg at the federal government. In 1986 she became honorary managing director of the djb in Bonn and held this position until 1997.
