The representative of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg to the Federal Government is the country representative of the country's Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in the federal government , based in the German capital Berlin . It is located in the district of Mitte in Jägerstrasse 1–3 not far from the German Bundestag , Bundesrat and other federal ministries , state representations and embassies .

authority

The state representation belongs to the Senate Chancellery . It represents Hamburg's interests at federal institutions. The political head of the state representation is the representative of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg to the federal government, the European Union and for foreign affairs. This has been State Councilor Almut Möller since October 1, 2019 .

Verena Herb, who previously worked as a spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth , has been the head of the state representation since September 1, 2018 .

function

The state representation safeguards and represents the interests of Hamburg at the federal institutions and participates in federal and European Union legislation. Her task also includes conveying the importance of Hamburg, with a focus on the areas of economy (as a center for services, the maritime economy, China center with its position in East Asian traffic, production location for aviation and location for the media and communication industry), research and Teaching (university location and research institutions) and as a city of culture and sports.

The agency is also a service provider for Hamburg as a business location and looks after business interests in coordination and cooperation with companies and associations. This is also done through support in the acquisition of projects or funding. It also serves as a forum for economic policy. For this purpose, it also provides its services and rooms, which can be rented.

In order to carry out these tasks, the representation maintains connections to members of the German Bundestag and government representatives, top officials, the diplomatic corps , associations , business representations and other institutions. It serves as a location for conferences and events, which also include art exhibitions and cultural events that are intended to comprehensively represent the profile and performance of the city.

building

After the Federal Council had relocated its seat from the former federal capital Bonn to Berlin, the representation moved into the current building in August 2000 (Jägerstrasse 1–3, 10117 Berlin). The agency in Bonn , which had existed since 1950, was given up at the same time. The state representation consists of two listed buildings built next to each other , house number 1 on the corner of Mauerstrasse and house numbers 2/3 (left of it).

Jägerstrasse 1

Corner house Jägerstrasse 1

The corner building was built in 1871 as a rental house by order of the businessman Emil Frank. The late 19th century plastered facade is architecturally framed by what will later be the outbuilding. Like the Jägerstrasse 2/3 property, the house was taken over by the GDR Cultural Association after 1949 .

Jägerstrasse 2/3

Central building; At the top right is the Dresden area , the apartment of the President of the Senate and First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg

The house Jägerstrasse 2/3 is the former Club-von-Berlin-building , which with its richly designed sandstone facade was built in 1892/1893 for the Club von Berlin , an exclusive gentlemen's club. Even after the merger to form the German Club of Berlin , it remained in his hands until it was expropriated by the Soviet military administration in 1945. The later founded Kulturbund der DDR received the building ensemble for use and had the house, which was badly damaged in the war, rebuilt. From 1947 to 1991 it served as the house of the Kulturbund with the club of cultural workers " Johannes R. Becher " housed in it .

Conversion to today's agency

The historic banister in the state representation (2006)

After the political change in 1989 and 1990, both buildings passed from the public property of the GDR into the possession of the federal government and were bought in 1998 by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. A building in Luisenstrasse acquired three years earlier by Hamburgische Landesbank was sold to the state of Saxony-Anhalt , which set up its representation at the federal level there.

In April 1999, the conversion and renovation of the building ensemble began by the Hamburg architects Dinse, Feest + Zurl . Inside the building, the houses were given a modern and functional design, whereby the sequence of rooms in the halls and the staircase with wide marble steps and wrought iron railings with brass handrails were retained in the main house.

The corner house (number 1) now houses offices, guest rooms and as a tenant (now next to the old headquarters) the Club of Berlin . Various rooms and halls, such as the fireplace room or the Hansekeller with bar, are set up as meeting places for politics, business and culture and are also rented out.

The office of the agent has been filled with varying degrees over the years. Most of the time, a member of the Senate performed this function in addition to his other responsibilities, mostly as the President of a specialist authority . Since 2001, the office has consistently been filled by a political official with the rank of a State Councilor .
