building

The building at Luisenstrasse 18 has an eventful history. The bourgeois house built in the first half of the 19th century was called Bülowsches Palais for unknown reasons .

In June 1946, the Soviet military administration opened the artist club Die Möwe (named after the play Die Möwe by Anton Chekhov ) in this house . Bertolt Brecht and Helene Weigel lived in the side wing for a while, artists such as Yves Montand , Sophia Loren and Klaus Kinski were guests. In 1968 the house became the central club of the art union “Die Möwe” . Numerous exhibitions, literary, theater and film events for the public were held here. In the 1980s the house had up to 70,000 guests in around 250 events each year. A theater library with 55,000 volumes and more than 100,000 programs was located in the rooms.

After the fall of the Wall , Die Möwe was closed due to lack of money. The Hamburgische Landesbank acquired the building in 1995 with the aim of accommodating the Hamburg state representation here . However, in 1998 they sold it to the state of Saxony-Anhalt. For purchase and renovation of the building, the State was 21.7 million euros from. It was expanded to include an extension. A parliamentary committee of inquiry in the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt also dealt with the purchase of the property.

The Mori-Ôgai memorial is located on the opposite side of the street at number 39 .
